Falcons at the library!
On Thursday, August 6, our neighbor Jim Lott of Applegate Orchards will bring two (or 3 or 4) of his falcons to the library for a 6 p.m. presentation. Mr. Lott will explain how he came to acquire over 70 aplomado falcons and he’ll describe how he trains the birds to patrol his blueberry fields. The discussion will last about 45 minutes (inside the library) and then Mr. Lott will take the falcons outside and let them fly a bit. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions.
Back in June, the Tri-City Herald had a front-page story about Mr. Lott and his falcons. The photo below is one of several in a Herald photo gallery that accompanied the story. See our previous post for details.
All ages are welcome. We hope to see you on Thursday!

The contests are:
- Bookmark contest! For school-age children (grades K to 12). Pick up an entry form at the library or print one out here (pdf). Winning bookmarks will be professionally printed and distributed at the library, and the winning artists will each receive a prize! (Sponsored by the Friends of the Burbank Community Library)

Standing room only for Bob Carson!
Last night, Whitman College Professor Bob Carson presented an excellent slide lecture on the geologic history of the Wallula Gap to a standing-room-only crowd at the Burbank Library. Over 120 people attended the event.
Professor Carson is the editor of Where the Great River Bends: A natural and human history of the Columbia at Wallula — published by Keokee Books.
Many signed copies of the book (which has over 200 full-color photographs) were sold at the event. For those interested in purchasing a copy of the book (including a signed copy), you can contact the publisher here.
See our previous posts about Professor Carson and his book here and here.
During the course of the lecture and the Q & A period that followed, Professor Carson recommended the following:
- This 3-minute Youtube video of the collapse of the Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina.
- A book entitled Plows, Plagues, and Petroleum: How Humans Took Control of Climate, which Professor Carson strongly recommended for those interested in educating themselves about climate change, and which we currently own one copy of in our WALNET library network. You can place a hold on this book by calling the Burbank Library or through our online catalog using your WALNET library card number. Please note that we will be purchasing an additional copy of this book for the Burbank collection.
- These driving directions (pdf), which were inadvertantly omitted from the first printing of Where the Great River Bends, to the high point on the west side of the Wallula Gap. (See the photo below.)
We’d like to thank the Tri-City Herald for its interest in this event, Keokee Books for helping us to promote it, our wonderful neighbors for bringing over extra chairs when we ran out of seats, and everyone who attended.
And a very special thanks, of course, to Professor Bob Carson for an excellent presentation. We hope he’ll visit us again at some point in the future.
